Erik first played organized football in 6th grade as a defensive lineman for the undefeated Mighty Mites Chiefs team of Springfield. In 2001 Erick moved to Fremont, NE where he played fullback, left guard, and defensive line. He was awarded the most outstanding lineman award. The following year he moved to Dallas, TX. While attending Ranchview High School he was the starting left guard and played running back in short yardage situations. He was also the starting nose guard on defense and deep snapper on field goal and punt. Erik won the award for most outstanding lineman his 8th, 9th, and 10th grade seasons.

After relocating a couple times in Texas, Erik's family moved to Ozark, MO where he played defensive tackle for the Tigers during his junior year of high school, earning the nickname "The Plug." Late in the season, Erik suffered a neck injury against the Tigers' rivals. Conflicting advice from doctors led him to retire from football after his Junior year.

After graduating high school, Erik had a chance encounter with a former coach of the Springfield Mustangs. He recruited Erik to play defensive tackle and fullback. Erik played for the Mustangs for 3 years and then joined the Ozark Titans. During his tenure with the Titans, he helped coach various positions.
